Teorinin amacı, yeryüzündeki en eski dilin Türkçe olduğunu ve diğer dillerin de Türkçeden türediğini ortaya koymaktır.
Yeryüzündeki bütün dillerin "güneş" kelimesinden türediğini savunan Güneş Dil Teorisi; aydınlatma, ısıtma ve yükselme vasıfları dolayısıyla güneşin tüm toplumlar için hayatî derecede önemi olduğunu vurgular. Kendisine kutsiyet atfedilen güneşin aydınlatma özelliği yeryüzünün görülebilir hâle gelmesini ve yaşamın gerçekleşebilmesini sağlarken, ısıtma özelliği yaşamın devamını getirir. Yükselme özelliği ise gücü ve kudreti temsil eder. Her şeyin kaynağı odur ve uzaklık, büyüklük, yükseklik gibi erdemler onda toplanır.
Yapılan çalışmalara rağmen Güneş Dil Teorisi beklenilen ilgiyi bulamaz ve Atatürk'ün vefatından sonra bir daha üzerinde herhangi bir çalışma yapılmaz. Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesinde konuyla ilgili olarak ders veren İbrahim Necmi Dilmen, "Güneş öldükten sonra onun teorisi mi kalır?" diyerek, Atatürk'ün ölümünden sonra bu teoriyle ilgili çalışmaların sona ermesinin sebebini açıklar.
